For a fleeting few weeks each spring, the fragrant lilac flower delights our senses and sweetens our spaces with an ombre of hues in purple and white. When something so magical occurs, it calls for a creative celebration. In true Flutter form, we visited Kilcoyne Lilac Farm in Acton, California, for a day of design with gardenista Elizabeth Kilcoyne, Flower Wild and the effervescent blooming beauties.
Once a passion project for Elizabeth, Kilcoyne Lilac Farm has turned into a full operation selling delightful bunches of lilac to wholesalers in Los Angeles every Spring. For those lucky enough to live in the area, their season starts this week and the Kilcoyne’s invite you to the farm daily from 10AM – 6PM for fresh cut flowers until their bloom runs out.
This spring, Kilcoyne has expanded the farm and will welcome their first season of garden roses: David Austin, Floribunda, and Hybrid Tea.
With a bit of patience and motherly nurturing, the magnificent annual bloom transports us to our happy place and we know it will send you to yours, too!
Arranging with Fresh-Cut Lilacs
1. Remove all the leaves.
2. Using clippers, split the woody stems vertically about 1-2 inches.
3. Lilacs are thirsty. As soon as you strip the leaves and clip the stems, place them in a clean bucket of water in a cool space.
4. Let the arranging begin!
5. Keep lilacs hydrated. Changing out water daily helps to prevent bacteria and ensure a longer lifespan.
