Did you know that Flutter is a film-based magazine? 100% of the publication is captured on film photography. While some may call it archaic, I call it art.
Here’s a little history… For those of you who don’t know me (Flutter’s founder + creative director, Kim Wiseley), I am a photo-phile. I have a passion for visual imagery and the art form behind the creation of it. I was the kid who skipped lunch in high school to spend more time in the darkroom developing photos. I eventually went to college for photography and serendipitously started Flutter when a series of stars, passion and perseverance aligned.
Flutter wouldn’t be what it is without my crazy obsession for its aesthetic. Each issue is designed to take you on visual journey – a delightfully inspiring experience that comes from the different fine art mediums purposefully scattered throughout. It’s a combination of each contributing artist, our friends at the film lab (shout out to Richard Photo Lab!), and my dear sweet printer who rises to the occasion of every print challenge I dream up (thank you, Sinclair!).
For me, the process of creating an image on film is an art form. One must understand light, the different qualities of film, the technical treatments, and the camera systems. I love hearing the sound of film winding after each shot.
With film, it’s not about instant gratification. It’s about patience and process, form and function. There’s a dreamy aesthetic quality that just can’t be beat. Whether you know it or not, it’s a big part of what makes your heart flutter while flipping through each issue. 🙂
Flutter delights in celebrating the joy of life through authentic storytelling, and the images captured on film are very much a part of that creative process. To each and every photographer we’ve worked with around the world, and to our friends behind-the-scenes at Richard Photo Lab, thank you for your tireless efforts and continued passion towards making Flutter a beautiful, one-of-a-kind success.
